is working on a Free Software voting system with paper ballot,based on an actual security audit of the voting process, together with public testing of conforming machines, and a set of requirements for conforming elections. We will offer these as the basis for national and international standards.

A voting machine with no paper is inherently insecure and not to be trusted to tell the time correctly. Paper, however, has its own security holes. Look up “Landslide” Lyndon Johnson if you are in any doubt on this matter. Also Chicago’s Mayor Daley (“Vote early and often,” “I want to be buried in Chicago when I die, so I can remain politically active,” etc.), and any number of other unsavory examples.

Using paper and electronics tegether means that one can have a genuine two-path audit trail backed up with checksums and encryption at appropriate points designed to protect against tampering.

Mal sehen, wann die Politiker in Deutschland bemerken, dass mit Wahlcomputern ihre Jobs nur noch von Software und nicht mehr von Wählern abhängen.

Ich hätte ja die Sorge, dass das nicht als Problem, sondern als Chance begriffen wird…
